Response Question :: Choosing Slavehood (1-62)

At several points, Harriet gives reasons why she doesn't want her freedom and would prefer to stay a slave at Monticello. List at least one of her reasons and explain what this shows us about Harriet's character. Do you agree with Harriet's idea to remain a slave?

One reason why Harriet would rather stay a slave at Monticello is because she feels safe there. I do not think she believe in herself, and that she often leans on other people for help. If i was Harriet i would want to leave as soon as i got the chance to. I would not want to spend my entire life serving someone and their family.

Harriet feels that she is treated like an average person and does not consider herself as a a slave . This shows that she is very naive, stubborn and unwilling to expand her outlook on a possible new life. I do not agree with Harriet's idea. I feel that she should experience life as a free citizen and then she should make her final decision on whether to stay a slave or not.

Harriet wants to stay at Monticello. She wants to be like her Mama to stay around and help the master. She feels as if she's safe there and nothing will happen to her. She thinks if she go out into the world, she won't have nothing. At Monticello, she is treated very well by the master. I do not agree with Harriet being a slave because being a slave you can get sold anytime. She's stubborn to acknowlegde the point. She's something special is the master's eyes but to everyone elses, she's just a slave.

One reason Harriet would rather stay at Monticello is because there she doesn't consider herself a slave. They treat her well there and she doesn't work hard on her chores. I don't agree with her because although she has some freedom she would have more when she is freed.Another reason she wants to stay is beacause she loves her master and thinks he's her father.

The reason Harriet don't want to leave is because she love Thomas Jefferson and think he is her father.
I think she is lonely because she never had a father in her life and want someone to love her back.
I also think she depend on people a lot. If she get her freedom she is on her own and have to take care of herself. I disagree with her. I think she should think of her future life if she stayed as a slave.

I really agree with Shanade. I believe that Harriet is very optimistic. She thinks of her enslavement as a good thing. She does not want to face the facts that she is a slave. She considers herself as a regular person. It's good that she does not consider herself as a slave, but she needs to stop being stubborn and face the facts.A reason she states about why she rather be a slave is because she feEls safe there. She thinks that the world outside her stay at Monticello has nothing to offer her. I disagree with Harriet because I wouldn't want to be a servant for anybody, whether they're treating me well or badly.

Have you ever heard the expression, "you can't miss something you never had?" All Harriet knows is life at Monticello. She feels safe there, and since she has never known anything different, it is difficult for her to imagine life-even life as a free woman- outside of Monticello. I really like Penny's idea about Harriet just wanting someone to love her back. I also really like Issata's use of WELL & BADLY :)

Please excuse the double negative in "you can't miss something you never had!"

One reason why Harriet would stay a slave at Monticello is for one she feels absolutely safe there and she always is expecting someone else to help her. She feels that she is treated as a normal person is treated and doesn't consider herself a slave. I personally think that if i had to bring people there tea and make there beds I would hate my life. I also think she should get out of the slave life and experience things that she hasn't done in her life.

i think that harriet doesnt want to be free because she has no other family living at Monticello as a "slave" is all she knows. i dont think she would know how to act and survive as a free person.i also think she doest want to be "free" because the life she is living now is not harsh like many other slaves. Harriet really doesnt have a good reason to become free.
