When Harriet presents her dilemma to her mother, we learn that Sally Hemings has heard from Harriet's brother Tom, but never told anyone. Why do you think Sally Hemings chose to keep her son's letters to herself? (Why might a slave choose to "forget" a family member who has passed for white?) Give specific reasons.
Harriet worries that she will also be "forgotten" like Tom if she leaves Monticello. Do you think this will happen if she does leave? Why or why not?

I think Sally Hemings kept the letter to herself because she don't want people to know the truth that her son protean to be white. Slaves forget there family members that were passed for white because they don't want the truth to be told. Then, that person will be in trouble and people will found out he or she is black, was or are a slave and not white. I think she will be forgotten but people will still whisper about her, just like what they do about her brother. They should not talk about her since she is supposed to be someone else.
Sally Hemings keeps her son's letter to herself because she doesn't want other slaves to know that her son betrayed his people. Another reason she doesn't want people to know is because no one besides his wife knows who he really is. I do think that Harriet will be forgotten because when she asked Mister Randolph the same question he said he was afraid she will be forgotten. A slave might choose to forget a family member who has passed for white because they might have to sacrifice not seeing them again but at least they'll know that they're safe and happy.
She chose to keep her son letter a secret becuase she didn't want people to know that he wrote to her. She wants to forget Tom because he's out there making babies with white women. I think this will happen because she'll have no other choice.
i Believe the reason why Sally heming kept the letter to protect her and her familys reputation and safety. i think she made a risky choose because if word got out soome thing bad could have happened. i agree with penny when she says how she will be forgotten but not fully beacuse people will still mention her name every now and then.
I think Sally Hemings kept the letters to herself because she didn't want people to know how he was doing. She didn't want people to know that her son was portraying himself to be shown as he was white to the world. I also think that she didn't want people to think that he has lost all respect for his own kind, meaning the rest of the African Americans.
I think that her mom is trying to forget about her son for his safety. It is not that she doesn't love her son, it is just that if someone finds out that he has black in him, he will be punished severely, and she doesn't want that to happen. When slaves tried to pass in white the pass, for their safety they had no content with their black family.
