Response Question: Hemings' "dream world" (182-end)

On page 193, Harriet describes that, for her mother Sally, there is a line "drawn between her dream world and the real one... I don't understand how she can keep them separate. But I think she knows she must or she will go mad."

What does Sally Hemings' "dream world" look like? Give a specific details about what her dream looks like. Do you think her maintaining this dream is a good or bad thing?

I think Sally Hemings' dream world is everyone being free and living their life just like how the white people do it. There's isn't any slaves. There wouldn't be a problem if a black person walks the grounds without any free papers. Black people wouldn't have to be slaves anymore. Black people can have a family and be with one other without any problems. They can travel to anywhere they want, do what they pleases without getting prosecuted or arrested. Her kids can grow up and have a big family. I think her maintaining the dream is a good thing. Even though she won't be able to live her dream, she'll know her kids are. When she's having a bad day, she can think on her dream world and it'll make her happy in so many ways. But I think it's also a bad thing because she won't be able to make it a reality.

In Sally Hemmings dream world she wants to beleive that since she got her children's freedom a long time ago that when they make these choices to take their freedom that nothing will happen to them that is horrible when they are out there in the world on their own. She feels that in the dream world her children like Beverly can still go to the university without any trouble. She looks over the reality that Jefferson want help him because he is black, and it would be too much trouble. Basically in her dream world she wants to think everthing is black& white. She keeps it seperate because it is ridiculous, especially in the time of slavery, and in reality she will go mad if she lets her dream world be her reality.

I agree with Tiffany. Sally Hemmings' dream is for everyone to be free and happy. You'd have blacks and whites at a dinner table together eating whatever is laid out. Nigras could do whatever because they would be free. Maybe even her and the man that she loves, Th. Jefferson, will grow old together. He'll let everyone for sure that he's the father of her children.
I think her maintaining this "dream world" is neutral. It's bad because her "dream world" wouldn't come true. But Its A good thing because she can use that dream to help her get over her childrens' leaving Monticello.

Sally Hemmings dream world is for every nigra person to be free. They don't have to wait until they're 21 to recieve free papers. They can live where they want, and do as they please. She can go knowing that her children will be safe when they're out of her sight. It's a good thing because it takes her mind off of the horrible realities she face in life. It's also a bad thing beacuse this dream world can confuse her if she combines it with the real world.

Sally Hemings' dream world is for all nigra to live happily. She want everyone to be treated equally like the whites. She hope things from free paper to born to slavery and other racist problems to disappear. I think it is a good thing because she know she would not be able to achieve this dream but she know her children will be able to experience it.

Sally Hemings' dream world is a world that she wishes is unlike the one she lives in now. She has this view of no slaves, free people and free wills. In her dream world she doesn't have to deal with these kinds of things. Life appears to be easier to deal with. Things like letting her children go wouldn't feel as heavy as they are now. Lastly, in her dream world she wishes to ignore any problems and focus on the task at hand, having her children take their freedom when it comes.

Sally Hemings' dream world is the exact opposite of the world she lives in. I think the setting of her dream world is in France. I believe she wishes to be in France with her children, and she wants all of them to be just as free as any white person. I think her maintaing this dream world is kind of a abd idea. It is just giving her false hopes. Sure her kids are going to be free but she will be at Monticello forever unable to actually be in this dream world.

i think that Sally Hemings dream world is about black and whites doing things together without a problem. She wish that black people was free. In her dream world she wish there was no racism and all that stuff disappeared. She wish people could do what they want and please without free papers. I think it's good that she have a dream world because whenever things bad happen she can look on the brightside which is her dream world and think positive instead of negative. But it's a bad thing because she will have to face the fact that it will never come true.

Sally Hemings dream world is a world were everyone black or white get along with everybody. Everybody would be free you would not need papers in order to walk around. Any one could live or work anywere they wanted. Even tho Sally Hemings can not be in the dream world she thinks of but she can think her children could be free.

i believe that sally hemings dream is for her people, afrcians can be free and be able to live there life without the premission of any body. i think sally keeping this dream is a bad thing because if its just here trying to make a diiference its not really going to count and her dream may not come true or she may not live to witness it.

Sally Heming's impression of a dream world consists of individuals having their own freedom and living their life by the way they want to. She is mostly reffering to slaves. Slaves wouldn't be slaves anymore. They wouldn't be considered as second-class human beings. They don't have to wait to turn a certain age to be removed from such status.Even though Sally cannot live this dream, she is very optimistic about it. I think that she her maintaining this dream is a good and bad thing.Like Tiffany pointed out, although she's not living the dream she know her children are. However, she's going to be at Monticello forever and giving herself false hopes like Gabby pointed out.
