Response Question: Passing (62-125)

After the altercation with Bankhead, Mister Randolph suggests to Harriet that she should consider "passing" for white. Randolph explains the many reasons he thinks Harriet should do it, but Harriet has her concerns.

Name one specific advantage Harriet will have if she does this, and one disadvantage. Based on their conversation, what do you think Harriet will choose to do? What would you do in her place?

If Harriet passed for white, she would be free and wouldn't need to carry around her free papers. One disadvantage if she doesn't pass for white is that she will be sold or married off to Mr. Bacon. Even though Harriet has her concerns about what Mister Randolph was saying, she has to think about her mother and the other servants. I think Harriet will pass for white just for her mother and the other servants. She'll pass for white but it doesn't mean she will forget who she is. She's just pretending to be white. But deep inside her, she knows she's a nigra and will always be a nigra and will never forget she is one. I would pass for white if I was in her position. Her mother has been pushing her to take her freedom and I wouldn't want to upset my mother. Like that saying .. " mother knows what's best for her children " ..

If Harriet decides to pass for white she will have a great advantage. She wouldn't have to be a slave any longer. She would be free to do what she wants and when she wants. However, if she doesn't try and pass for white her family will just marry her off. She will be a slave for the rest of her life just like her mother.
I have a feeling that Harriet will not pass for white. She seems to want to stay at Monticello forever. I also think that she does not want to have to forget her friends and family just like her brother did. Finally, for some reason i believe that she might like Thruston. Although she does not show it I just think she might.
If I were in Harriets position I would try and pass for white. Even though i would be leaving behind my friends and family, I would be making a better future for my children and grandchildren. In this kind of situation you cannot think of only yourself, you have to think of all of the people around you and how it may effect them.

If Harriet decides to pass as white she will have many advantages. She will no longer have to be a slave and she will have a better chance in making it in her new life. By her passing as white she will have many oppurtunies come her way. A disadvantage is that she could get caught up in her lie of passing as completely white and her fellow citizens could find out. I think that she is scared but she knows that she has to do it. I would definitely take the oppurtunity but I would make sure that I am completely skilled before I actually leave.

One advantage of Harriet "passing" for white is that her life would be easier. She will be free, protected, she wouldn't have to carry around her free papers, and she wouldn't have to worry so much about her future family's life.
A disadvantage of Harriet not passing for white is that she may have to marry Mr. Bacon after all, or if the master isn't still alive before she's allowed to be free, then she could be sold into slavery along with the other nigra servants.
Based on the conversation she had with Mr. Randolph, I think Harriet would probably not choose to pass as white. She's the rebel type and she wouldn't want to "disown" her African-American side by passing as a white.
I would definitely pass as white if I were her. I would want my life to be easier and I would want to be free like my brother Tom.

One advantage of Harriet passing for white is that she'll be able to live her life however she wants to. Another advantage is that her mother will know that her daughter is safe. One disadvantage of Harriet passing for white is that she can be sold to another slave owner or she can also be married off to a person she doesn't like. Based on the conversation with Randolph I think Harriet will pass as white because she knows her mother wants this more than anything. If I was her I would pass as white for the sake of my family and to know that my future is safe.

One specific advantage Harriet will have if she does this is, she will not be a slave anymore. a disadvantage is that if she stays is that she'll have to get married or she'll get sold away. I think that Harriet will stay because she feels safe at Monticello. I would leave because i wouldn't want to marry anyone i do not choose to.

If a person of color "passes" as a white person, are they being disrespectful to their heritage?

If harriet passed for white an advantage would be that she would not be a slave and aould be free. An disavantage would be she would be caught in a lie and would get some sort of punishment.if i was her i would at like i was born white beacause there is a possiblity that she might be harmed in the future from her being a slave.

If Harriet passed for white, there are many of advantages. One advantage is that she will be free. She will be treated as a white person, which in her time was with respect. she will have a better chance to succeed, education wise.
Besides the advantages, there are also disadvantaged. During her life now, she is happy and enjoying her life. If she chose to pass as white, she will be treated as any other white person. She wouldn't be known as the gifted slave, who was very bright. The life she has now will be left behind, and a new life will resume. She will have to start over and there will be no one to care or feel sorry for her any more.

Mister Randolph insist that Harriet should pass as white for an easier life. He is thinking about how she can survive in this world without much struggle.Harriet is thinking about how she may lose who she is. She finds out from her mom that her brother Tom has did the smae thing, and is sucessful so far, and this is when she changes her mind.
