Response Question: White Women, Nigra Women (125-182)

When she first meets her potential suitor, Thad, Harriet gets into an argument about who has more freedom, white women or slave women. Who does Harriet think is better off? Explain why YOU think she has this viewpoint. When Thad says that "they [Harriet's mother and grandmother] made the best of the world they were given," what does he mean?

Harriet thinks that slave women has more freedom. I think that she has this viewpoint because all she knows is Monticello. Anne was her specific example and, to harriet, she possesed no freedom.
When Thad said that "[they] made the best of the world they were given," he meant that they took advantage of what they were given. They weren't as restricted as other slave women.

I think Harriet believes that slave women are better off. While she was living in Monticello she would see how Anne would be beat by her husband. This is what i think lead her to believe that slaves are better off. Also, when Thad says "they" made the best of what they were given I think he's trying to say they didn't have much of a choice. All they had was Monticello they weren't able to leave like Harriet was, so they tried to make things better where they were.

I thinks Harriet believe being a slave is better because she don't know any other place beside Monticello. Since she only been used to one place she think that how the whole world is like. For an example, Harriet said Anne Bankhead can't be free because of her husband and that slave has more freedom then her.
What Thad meant when he said they made the best of the world they were given is they simply accepted they were slaves and they tried to do the best at what they do.

I think that Harriet considers slave woman having more laxity then white woman. I think this because in Monticello all Harriet seen was how Anne was restrained by her husband and is treated worse then the slaves. When Thad said "they made the best of what they had." I think he ment they worked with what they were given without complaining.

I think Harriet thinks that slave women are better off. The reason I think this is because she knows that Anne who is a white woman gets beat by her husband, also because she had just found out that white women weren't allowed to own land or vote. When Thad says that they made the best of what they had he meant that they worked well with what they had and didn't complain.

i agree with everybody that Harriet think a slave women have it better beacuse she sees that white women have no voice of opinion or freedom. Plus shes sees Anne getting beat and her grandmother and mother get treated better then a white women and they are slaves. when thad said " they made the best of the world they were given" i think he was saying that they took advanage of something good that they had.

Harriet thinks that slaves have more freedom. She has that viewpoint because in monticello she felt free. She felt more like the daughter of the man wrote the declaration of independence, Thomas Jefferson, than a slave. At first she didnt even want to leave Monticello. The reason why she think whites didn't have more freedom because she seen how Anne was beat by her husband and she found out that women wasn't allowed to vote or own land. when Thad said that they made the best of what they were given; they knew they were slaves and didnt complain about anything and did what they were told because they knew they didnt have it bad as others.
